How to Start Your Coaching Business With Zero Budget

Someone slid into my DMs recently with a question I wasn't expecting.

"How do I start my business when I have literally no money?"

No budget. No runway. Just a purpose and a question mark.

And honestly? It's one of my favorite things to answer. Because the answer is simpler than most people think.

Start With What You Already Know

Before you spend a single dollar, you need to know what you're selling. And no, "I want to help people" doesn't count.

Get specific. What's your thing? What do people already come to you about? What conversations do you find yourself having over and over again where you could talk for hours?

If you already know, great. Go with it.

If you don't, pull up your Human Design chart. (Get it free on my website HERE). Look at your centers. Specifically, look at the open ones.

Open centers in Human Design are your profit centers. They're where you've absorbed the most energy over your lifetime, where you've done the most learning, where you've developed actual wisdom. The spleen center? Health, wellness, instinct. The solar plexus? Emotions, nervous system regulation, intuition. Each center represents a whole world of expertise you've been building without even realizing it.

Go through your open centers. Google what each one means. Ask yourself which one makes you think: yeah, people ask me about this all the time.

That's your starting point.

Pick One Way to Find Clients (Just One)

Now you need to get in front of people. And you don't need money to do it. You need a plan and a little patience.

Social media. Free. All of it. Pick the platform that doesn't make you want to throw your phone across the room and start posting as consistently as you can about your thing. TikTok, Instagram, X, Substack. They all work. The best one is whichever one you'll actually use.

Podcast guesting. Slower, but powerful. Facebook groups are full of hosts looking for guests right now. Pitch yourself. Lead with what you know and how it serves their audience. You won't book a hundred clients overnight, but you'll get in front of real people who are paying attention. And you only need a few of them to say yes.

In-person workshops. Go to local businesses, studios, offices, wherever your ideal client hangs out. Pitch a free workshop. Use their space, their audience, their energy. You create the content (free), they provide the room and the people. I've seen someone host one workshop and book 20 clients. I've also seen people workshop for months before anything clicked. Both are possible. The difference usually comes down to being in front of the right room with the right message.

Which one feels right? Run it through your strategy and authority. Your gut already knows.

What About Materials?

Canva has a free version. There are free Canva alternatives if you search TikTok or Google. System.io has a free plan. So does Podio. Squarespace and WordPress let you start without spending a cent.

You don't need a perfect website on day one. You need a place to send people when they want to learn more. That's it.

What Resource Do You Have Right Now?

This is the question nobody asks, but everyone needs to answer.

Some people have money. They can pay someone to handle the tech, the design, the strategy. Others have time. They can research, test, and iterate. Some have an existing network. Some have creativity or technical skills that get them further faster.

Money is one resource. It's not the only one.

If time is what you've got, use it. Research the tools. Test the platforms. Figure out what works before you start writing checks.

The Short Version

Figure out your niche. Find your people. Make them an offer.

That's it. Three steps, zero dollars required to get started.

The question isn't whether you can afford to build a business. It's whether you're willing to use what you already have.
