Identifying Limiting Beliefs

Uproot Undesirable Limiting Decisions and Beliefs

A limiting belief is a thought or belief that limits or negatively affects your actions and decisions in life. It can hold you back from reaching your full potential.

Limiting beliefs occur because of a limiting decision that was made at some point in our past, and has continued to be believed. This limiting decision can be either conscious or subconscious and prevents us from reaching our highest potential. If not addressed, a person will continue to have a skewed perception of the world and believe that “this is how life is”, and accept their undesirable circumstances, as long as this decision stays rooted.

There are many ways to identify limiting beliefs, but below are three ways you can become aware of your limiting beliefs as your first step toward change:

  1. Becoming aware of negative self-talk.

Discerning when you are being overly critical of yourself and noticing the thoughts that are holding you back.

  2. Looking for patterns in your behavior.

Paying attention to situations that trigger negative emotions and how you react to them.

  3. Examinine your model of reality, what you think is “true”.

Challenging the stories you tell yourself can help you identify the beliefs that are limiting your potential.

To eliminate your limiting beliefs, it’s important to start with awareness and acceptance. Acknowledge the belief and understand why it exists. Then, replace the limiting belief with a more empowering one. By yourself, this can be done through positive affirmations, visualizations, and reframing your thoughts. With assistance, tools such as NLP, Hypnosis, and Neuro Energetic Wiring provide powerful results.

No matter how you choose to enact change, it’s also important to practice self-compassion, be patient with yourself, and focus on the positive aspects of your life.
